A slow burn, a grand scheme. In an industry often characterised by apathy and relentless competition, both Bella Redman-Brown and Lauren Hart McKinnon envision something different.
Over a decade of close encounters (see: kismet), Bella and Lauren first met in high school, though did not become close until landing in the same university classes. They began a working relationship, with Lauren supporting Bella in a freelancing capacity through the launch of her label Be Right Back. After years of nurturing their professional relationship and uncovering a dynamic based on radical honesty, complementary skills, and a desire to work in alignment with their values, the pair decided that their partnership was simply too rare not to solidify.
How it BeganObject Merchant began in our studio on Johnston Street, Collingwood as a monthly retail event series, curated by fashion label Be Right Back.
Through a community built over years of working in the local creative scene, founder Bella Redman-Brown invited five makers each month, across various disciplines to sell their wares in a thoughtful environment, punctuated by live music, carefully sourced beverages and artisanal scents.
These events introduced makers to new audiences, and encouraged cross-pollination of ideas, introducing artists and designers to other talent from disciplines outside of their own. Many of these makers have gone onto collaborate and build lasting professional relationships.
The Grand Annual Object Merchant In 2024, to celebrate a full calendar year of monthly Object Merchant events we offered The Grand Annual Object Merchant, an event designed to retain the intimacy of previous events on a significantly larger scale.
Held at the iconic, heritage listed Meat Market in North Melbourne, we dialled up the spectacle to create an immersive experience for the audience, bringing together more makers, music, and performance.
The event was launched through the Opening Night Ball, featuring a carefully curated lineup of musicians, dancers, performers, and beverages. Attracting an audience of design lovers, fashion enthusiasts, and misfits, this evening fulfils key elements of the Object Merchant purpose: to inspire, provoke and connect.
We haven’t looked back.
Where we are nowObject Merchant continues to push the boundaries of traditional retail, looking to up the ante on each iteration of our offering.
